A conversation between Daniel S. Palmer, Leon Levy Assistant Curator, and Evan Michelson, of Obscura Antiques & Oddities, and Scholar-in-Residence at the Morbid Anatomy Museum, in conjunction with the exhibition Masterpieces & Curiosities: Diane Arbus’s Jewish Giant. Their talk will cover the development of the exhibition, from the original selection of the Diane Arbus photograph A Jewish giant at home with his parents, in the Bronx, N.Y., 1970 to the biography of the photo’s subject, Eddie Carmel, as well as address themes elucidated by the exhibition, such as bodily abnormalities, difference, side-show performance, and display.

Evan Michelson is an antiques dealer, lecturer, and writer. She is co-owner of New York City’s Obscura Antiques & Oddities, where she has specialized in medical and scientific antiques, natural history specimens and various strange, unclassifiable items for more than 20 years. She is also one of the stars of the Science Channel’s long-running hit show “Oddities” (just finishing its fourth season). Evan is also a long-standing Scholar-in-Residence and a founding board member of New York City’s Morbid Anatomy Museum (formerly the Morbid Anatomy Library). She has lectured at FIT, The Coney Island Museum, The Morbid Anatomy Library, and Death Salon, in Los Angeles. Her latest essay on the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo can be found in the newly released Morbid Anatomy Anthology.
