Unorthodox

On Religion

Talk

Thursday, February 18, 2016
6:30 – 8 pm
Scheuer Auditorium

Alan Levenson, Director of the Schusterman Center for Judaic & Israel Studies at the University of Oklahoma, and author of The Making of the Modern Jewish Bible: How Scholars in Germany, Israel, and America Transformed an Ancient Text, in conversation with Susan Katz Miller, journalist and author of Being Both: Embracing Two Religions in One Interfaith Family. Miller (an interfaith child, partner, and parent) will address "unorthodox" identities and practices in interfaith families, based on her own surveys and interviews with families across the country. Levenson teaches Judaism to mainly non-Jewish students, and sees socialist-Zionists, feminists, JuBus and others exemplifying the “unorthodox” identities of modern Jews. Together they wonder if the 21st century can accommodate Jewishness or just Jewish-ness?

This program is made possible, in part, by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations.
The Jewish Museum is pleased to co-present a series of programs with 92Y in conjunction with our exhibition Unorthodox on view through March 27.
