Think Coffee, Union Square, 123 4th Ave, NYC
A breakfast salon for the 21st century that takes place in the early hours of the day at Think Coffee, Union Square, hosted by the Jewish Museum. Artist Alix Pearlstein discusses her recent projects with Jens Hoffmann, Director of Special Exhibitions and Public Programs.
Alix Pearlstein's work in video, installation, photography, and performance has been widely exhibited. Pearlstein exploits the legacies of minimalism, structuralist film and postmodern dance to create an affective space between camera, viewer, and subject. She works with ensemble groups of actors, mining their professional skills and subjectivity to explore character, behavior, motivation, relationships, group dynamics and social constructs, while foregrounding the codes of acting and performance. With a focus on the human and the figurative, she mines a zone between the spatial, psychological, and emotional.
Selected solo exhibitions include deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; Samsøn, Boston; Ballroom Marfa, Texas; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; On Stellar Rays, NYC; CAM, St. Louis; The Kitchen, NYC; MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge MA and MCA, Chicago. Performances have been seen at Art Basel, Miami; The Park Avenue Armory; Esopus Space and Salon 94, NYC. Her works have been included in exhibitions at Whitechapel, London; ParaSite, Hong Kong; INOVA, Milwaukee; MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam, Israel; Internationale D’Art De Quebec; Annual Exhibition of Visual Art, Ireland; The Whitney Museum, NYC; SMAK, Ghent, Belgium; Biennale de Lyon, France and The Museum of Modern Art, NYC. She is a recipient of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts 2011 Grants to Artists Award. Pearlstein is on the faculty of the SVA MFA Program, and the Board of Governors of The Sko.
