Learn traditional Shibori fabric dyeing techniques using a variety of all-natural materials during this afternoon workshop taught by artist and designer Kalen Kaminski. Focusing on pattern and color, participants create their own wearable silk piece inspired by garments from around the world on view in the exhibition, Veiled Meanings: Fashioning Jewish Dress, from the Collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
All materials included; All skill levels welcome.
Kalen Kaminski grew up in Boulder Colorado riding horses and always working on creative projects. She attended the University of Colorado where she received a BA in Anthropology and Art History, and currently lives and works in New York City and Marfa, Texas. Kaminski is the creator and designer of the clothing and home goods company Upstate and works as a set designer and prop stylist for editorial, ad, and catalog projects. She taught herself Shibori dyeing techniques, which inspired her to establish Upstate in 2010. In 2013, Upstate collaborated with Of A Kind and subsequently launched their first full women’s apparel collection. Kaminski has taught Shibori fabric dyeing in numerous workshops in NYC, California, and Marfa, Texas. Over the past 7 years, Upstate has gone from a passion project to a celebrated clothing line that can be found in stores all over the country.
Kalen will have a selection of her dye kits, beauty sleep pillows, and raw silk sarongs for sale at the workshop.
