Kristen Windmuller-Luna, Collections Research Specialist, African Arts at the Princeton University Art Museum leads a gallery talk focusing on African masks included in Modigliani Unmasked, exemplifying work which inspired the young artist during this lesser-known early period. Starting from the premise that African and European arts are each modern in their own right, it considers connections between Modigliani's signature portraits, Parisian "primitive" art collecting, and West and Central African masquerade arts.
Kristen Windmuller-Luna, PhD is a New York City-based curator and historian of African arts. Focusing on cross-cultural exchange and globalization, her recent research on early connections between African and European Christian art has taken her everywhere from the heights of Ethiopian mountains to the depths of the Vatican archives. Featured in the PBS documentary Africa’s Great Civilizations, she has published in Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, The Journal of Jesuit Studies, Journal 18: a journal of eighteenth-century art and culture, and the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.
