American Art Family Day

Families are invited to discover masterworks of Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Ben Shahn and other notable artists collected by art dealer Edith Halpert at this family extravaganza. Collage a pop-up cityscape, sculpt a playful figure, paint a colorful still life in our art studio, hear the jazz age stylings of Grammy Winner Lucy Kalantari and the Jazz Cats, collaborate on a giant work of art, participate in a gallery tour, and more.

American sign language interpretation will be provided from 1-3 pm

Family Day Schedule:
 
Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats  11:30 am & 2 pm – two sets

Groove to delightful jazz age inspired music for all ages with the Grammy-nominated band Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats! See artworks projected of artists Edith Halpert championed during the era jazz was in full swing across the country. Enjoy the interactive jazz-scat-along play, while singing about the simple joys and delights of life.

The 2 pm concert will have sign language interpretation.

11 am – 4 pm:  Drop-in Art Workshops

- Pop-Up Cityscapes - Collage a unique city scene inspired by Jacob Lawrence and John Marin. Find creative ways to make buildings and characters come to life and pop off the page.

- Playful Figures - Using self-hardening clay to sculpt a figure or head of a person inspired by the sculptures of Eli Nadelman and other striking sculptures collected by Halpert. 

- Colorful Still Life - Paint with watercolor a close up view of natural objects such as shells, tree branches, leaves, flowers, rocks after viewing the brilliant paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe.

- Collaborative Neighborhood - Combine found objects, cardboard and other materials to design a neighborhood diorama that brings together a variety of people in a sculptural environment.

1 pm and 3 pm:  Spotlight Gallery Tours
An educator will conduct a brief gallery tour with a sketching opportunity that will spotlight art work on view in the exhibition.
The 1 pm tour will have sign langauge interpretation. 

All day
