Celebrate the festival of lights as a family at the Jewish Museum! Build a sculptural Hanukkah lamp with funky found objects — a Jewish Museum tradition. Dance to the pop-rock tunes of Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, sketch Hanukkah lamps from around the globe on a gallery tour, and watch a unique Hanukkah story come to life through a drawing performance.

Drop-in Art Workshops
11 am – 4 pm

Found Object Menorahs
Design whimsical Hanukkah menorah sculptures with found objects such as wood shapes, spools, wire, and metallic forms inspired by Hanukkah lamps on view in Scenes from the Collection.

Hanukkah Menorah Stamping
Create a mini-gallery scene stamping your own collection of menorahs from around the world and incorporating colorful drawing materials.

Collaborative Hanukkah Sculpture
Collaborate on a large scale work of art inspired by contemporary menorahs using tape, cardboard, and other unexpected objects.

Invent Your Own Light Object
Noon to 3 pm

Staff of The GIANT Room come uptown to our event and invite families to design their own light object using LEDs and other playful creative materials inspired by Jewish Museum collection objects on view.

The GIANT Room is an Innovation Hub for children to discover interests, ideate challenges they care to solve, get messy and bring their ideas into reality. The GIANT room resembles the cool and playful culture of a startup paired with roots in the learning sciences. It is located in Chelsea and was founded by Educators Azi Jamalian, PhD & Jessica Mezei, PhD.

Two Concerts: Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights     
11:30 am & 2 pm

Enjoy the unique and lively tunes of “kindie rocker” Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights as they perform playful twists on Hanukkah favorites along with original tunes such as “Spinning.” From pop-rock to gospel to country music stylings, hear hits from her albums,Brooklyn Baby!Good Egg, and Meshugana.

Hanukkah Spotlight Tours  
12:30 pm & 3 pm
Discover Hanukkah lamps on a brief gallery tour with sketching activities.

Floor 4: Art Studio

Holiday Still Life
12:30 pm – 3 pm
Paint a fun mix of holiday objects such as oil lamps, menorahs made in different materials, shiny fabrics, and more inspired by art on view in the exhibition Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art.

Drawing Performance: Artful Hanukkah Stories     
1 pm

Families will see an exciting tale unfold in this eye-catching performance using live drawing, animation, and narration with movement. On wall-sized paper Jeff Hopkins brings characters and action to life in this one-of-a-kind happening created for Hanukkah Family Day.
 
Jeff Hopkins is a storyteller, illustrator, and educator. He performs his drawing/storytelling shows for students and families at schools and museums all over the country. For the past 15 years, Jeff has worked as a teaching artist for arts organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum and the American Ballet Theater. In addition, he has received honors for his illustrated children’s books.
