Two remarkable collections of Jewish ceremonial objects miraculously survived World War II: the collection from the city of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) and the objects restituted from the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, Inc. In this lecture Curator of Judaica Abigail Rapoport tells the precious stories of these objects. When and how did these two collections escape World War II? Who were the people that owned and cherished some of the pieces? What was the role of the Jewish Museum in preserving these treasured objects and who were the key players responsible for their survival?

This talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition Afterlives: Recovering the Lost Stories of Looted Art, on view through January 9, 2022.
