This three-session course focuses on current and past Jewish Museum exhibitions centered around the art produced or looted during World War II. Begin with an exploration of Afterlives: Recovering the Lost Stories of Looted Art on view through January 9, 2022 and learn about the loss, destruction, and recovery of artworks and cultural property that were stolen by Nazi forces. Then, dive deeper into the work that artist Marc Chagall created in response to the suffering inflicted by the Holocaust and his own personal losses with Chagall: Love, War, and Exile (September 15, 2013 - February 2, 2014). Lastly, experience The Hare with Amber Eyes, opening November 19, 2021 and on view through May 15, 2022, and discover the story of the Ephrussi family’s rise to prominence and splendor in Paris and Vienna from the first half of the nineteenth century, to the inter-war years, and finally during World War II, when the family lost its fortune and collection to Nazi looting.
