Zoom, Virtual Program
In this two-part virtual course, learn about the genre-defying works of Roberto Burle Marx and Marta Minujín, two titans of modern and contemporary Latin American art. First explore the Museum’s past exhibition Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist (May 6 - September 18, 2016). Burle Marx was one of the most influential landscape architects of the twentieth century, best known for his iconic seaside pavements on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach; his abstract, geometric garden designs; and his vision of nature as a liberating force in Brazil and beyond. Then journey into the exuberant world of Marta Minujín, one of Argentina’s most visible and prolific living artists. Over the past six decades, from Buenos Aires to Paris, New York, and back again, she has contributed to the feminist art movement, land art, happenings, Pop, and psychedelia, always with her own spin. Marta Minujín: Arte! Arte! Arte! (on view through April 1, 2024) features her signature fluorescent mattress sculptures, large-scale psychedelic paintings, immersive multimedia environments, and socially engaged monumental artworks, all designed to provide a source of pleasure and fun, often when it is least expected and needed most.
