James L. Weinberg Distinguished Lecture

Join us for a lecture by Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of Art History, emeritus, at the University of Pennsylvania, as he discusses the biblical books of Tobit and Daniel, the lesser-known tales of Jewish life in the Persian diaspora. Along with the Book of Esther, these stories held great fascination for Rembrandt, and his pictorial representations read as stories about both Jewish survival and a prophetic future. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt.

About the speaker:

Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of Art History, emeritus, taught at the University of Pennsylvania for 20 years, specializing in painting and graphics of Northern Europe, during the era of Renaissance and Reformation, with a secondary expertise in Jewish art history. He served as President of the College Art Association and the Historians of Netherlandish Art, and also served as co-founder and Editor in Chief of the on-line reviews journal of the College Art Association.
