New York Jewish Film Festival 1995
The Jewish Museum and The Film Society of Lincoln Center present Beyond Perestroika: Jews and History in the Global Village.
Beyond Perestroika explores representations of Jews at a time when the end of Communism and the Cold War is no longer news. Recent European films favor personal stories and character studies over the often dramatic historical events amidst which they take place. This penchant for family stories, young love, and youthful identity-seeking is particularly evident in our special focus on films from the former USSR. Having grown up in the 1960s and 70s, most of the directors of these films seem to regard the excesses of the Soviet era less as living legacy than as absurdist nightmare, from which we have all finally awakened.
