A Closer Look: Art History Seminar

Chagall and the Avant-Garde

May. 4, 2026 11:30 am - 12:45 pm
Wilf Family Salon

Join us on select Mondays for an in-person course inspired by objects in the Jewish Museum Collection and led by Nelly Silagy Benedek, Deputy Director, Education & Programs. Classes include a discussion in the newly opened Wilf Family Salon and close looking in the galleries.

In 1910 Marc Chagall traveled to Paris to immerse himself in the exciting avant-garde art scene. There, he encountered the works of Pablo Picasso, Robert and Sonya Delaunay, and Fernand Léger among others and absorbed the lessons of Cubism and Orphism. Learn how Chagall then translated these new ideas and innovative stylistic approaches into his own personal visual language.

Course topics:

Monday, May 4: Chagall and the Avant-Garde

Monday, May 11: Chagall: Love, War, and Exile

Tickets: $48 General; $40 Jewish Museum members, students, and seniors.

Price includes both sessions.
