Director’s Talk: James S. Snyder in Conversation with Edmund de Waal

James S. Snyder, Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director, speaks with author and Jewish Museum collection artist, Edmund de Waal, whose work tehillim (2018) is included in the upcoming exhibition Sacred Splendor: Jewish Ritual Art and Christian Treasures from St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. His bestselling memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes has won numerous prizes, been translated into twenty-nine languages, and was the subject of a past exhibition at the Jewish Museum. His previous book The White Road, a journey into the history of porcelain, was published in 2015.

Edmund de Waal is an artist who writes. Much of his work is about the contingency of memory: bringing particular histories of loss and exile into renewed life. Both his artistic and written practice have broken new ground through their critical engagement with the history and potential of ceramics, as well as with architecture, music, dance and poetry.
