Celebrate the whimsical and colorful world of painting and theater presented in the exhibition Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry. Design an imaginative character, pose in costume for a portrait, paint a dancer, hear the hip and award-winning sounds of Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards, explore the galleries, and so much more. Family Day Schedule
Noon – 4pm: Drop-In Art Workshops
Imaginative Paper Puppets
Design an imaginative puppet with collage, fabric, feathers, and other exciting textures and materials inspired by the playful characters in Florine Stettheimer’s paintings.
Pop-up Scene
Construct a pop-up scene similar to the set designs of Stettheimer with colorful papers and drawing materials.
Costumed Selfies
Pose in costumes for a one-of-a-kind family portrait using a Stettheimer theme.
1 pm – 3 pm: Paint a Dancer! Art Studio Session
Paint a live dancer striking multiple poses inspired by the performers and dancers found in Florine Stettheimer paintings. Using watercolor families will be discover ways to quickly capture a character or figure in this drop-in session in our art studio.
12:15 pm and 2 pm: Two Concerts—Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards
Dance to the award-winning sounds of Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards with their swinging and contagious jazz beats offering a New Orleans inspired gumbo of sound for all ages. Jazzy Ash’s band includes an array instruments including a ukulele, banjo, fiddle, trombone, and washboard playing tunes from Stettheimer’s era-- the Jazz age. NPR's All Things Considered calls Jazzy Ash "one of the most talked about children's music artist this year."
Jazzy Ash is a celebrated songwriter, music educator and founder of Leaping Lizards Music Programs. Jazzy Ash’s music is primarily inspired by her New Orleans roots and early jazz. She is praised by Sirius XM Radio / Kids Place Live as their “favorite new musical discovery.” Jazzy Ash’s first album Ready offers peppy songs exploring preschool concepts, and her second album Home was the first to explore her New Orleans musical heritage. The first single from Bon Voyage,“Heebie Jeebies” has already hit #1 on the kids music charts. Jazzy Ash has performed for families in over 50 venues across the country, including World Café Live in Philadelphia, The Rumpus Room (Sirius XM Radio), National Head Start Conference, Louisiana Children’s Museum, & Getty Center.
1 pm and 3 pm: Spotlight Tours
An educator will conduct a brief gallery tour with a sketching opportunity that will spotlight paintings and set designs from the Florine Stettheimer exhibition.
