Development Officer for Exhibitions

The Jewish Museum seeks an experienced development officer knowledgeable in grant writing and prospect management to play a key role in cultivating, stewarding, and securing new and renewed exhibition support from foundations, individuals, corporations, and government agencies. The Development Officer for Exhibitions will maintain and grow relationships with funders; write highly effective exhibition grant proposals; create and implement funding plans; act as a representative of the Museum to donors and other key stakeholders, and develop and execute cultivation strategies to secure new and current funders. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer, strong project manager, excellent communicator, goal oriented and self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to meet all deadlines.  A passion for the arts and a strong understanding of arts and cultural funders is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, solicit, and steward a diverse and robust portfolio of exhibition funders, including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies, working in conjunction with colleagues in Institutional Giving, Major Gifts, Research, Curatorial, Marketing, and other senior staff.
  • Think creatively to develop and implement cultivation and stewardship strategies to secure new sources of support and manage relationships with current donors.
  • Write high-quality exhibition proposals, including creating cover letters, LOIs, one page summaries, sponsor booklets, budgets, meeting briefings, and other supplementary materials in collaboration with various Museum departments.
  • Act as an effective representative of the Museum, taking meetings and phone calls with donors both independently and in conjunction with the Associate Director of Institutional Giving or other senior staff.
  • Oversee reporting and tracking of exhibition grants, including submitting interim and final reports, reconciling budgets, and managing the stewardship process in collaboration with colleagues across the Museum.
  • Track current and potential funders to ensure timely and appropriate solicitation and follow up; prepare status reports for Trustees and Museum Directors as requested.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date donor and research files and Salesforce records.
  • Participate in development-related special events, entailing some evening and weekend hours.

Requirements:

  • Three to five years of development and grant writing experience with a proven record of personally cultivating, securing, and stewarding support, preferably in an art museum or cultural field
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, take initiative, and to work well both independently and part of a team
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills with the ability to write and speak in clear and compelling ways.
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills, reflecting clear, critical, and creative thinking
  • Experience managing grants, including budget creation and oversight
  • Strong judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work periodic weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, Microsoft Office (specifically Excel), Adobe Acrobat Pro preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred
