Minding the Gap (2018), 93 minutes
Compiling over 12 years of footage shot in his midwestern hometown, director Bing Liu examines the connections between his skateboarder friends' turbulent upbringings and the complexities of modern-day masculinity in Minding the Gap. The young men bond across racial lines to escape volatile families and, as they face adult responsibilities, unsettling revelations force them to reckon with their parents and each other. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, the film is a story of generational forgiveness that explores the precarious gap between childhood and adulthood. Content warning: This film depicts alcohol and drug use, includes the use of strong language, and includes content about depression and childhood abuse. Q&A with director Bing Liu will follow the film screening.
Movies that Matter: Film Screenings for Schools
In this semiannual program, the Jewish Museum invites middle and high school students and teachers to view award-winning documentary films that examine current social issues such as representation and identity, immigration, and civil rights, followed by discussions with filmmakers. This year, Movies that Matter celebrates 25 years of programming by revisiting some or our most popular and powerful screenings to date.
Visit TheJewishMuseum.org/MoviesThatMatter for more information on selected films. To register, email moviesthatmatter@thejm.org. In person screenings are limited to 40 tickets per screening per school.
