Winter/Spring 2019 Season of Family Programs at the Jewish Museum

New York, NY, January 3, 2019 – The Jewish Museum launches its winter/spring 2019 season of family programs in January with performances, art workshops, and more.

The Museum welcomes two new acts to its slate of family performances, with Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats and  Michael & The Rockness Monsters joining long-time favorites The Pop Ups, Hot Peas ‘N Butter, and The Paper Bag Players. Other programs on the schedule are the annual Freedom Art Jam Art & Dance Party for Passover on April 7; drop-in art workshops every Sunday and on selected holiday weekdays; and family art activities. Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats

Playing jazz age-inspired music for kids, Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats will perform songs from their new Grammy nominated album All The Sounds and lead the audience in an interactive scat session. Ages 2-9

Michael & the Rockness Monsters

Families can rock out to the funk-inspired tunes, quirky rhythmic melodies, and rich instrumentation of Michael & the Rockness Monsters, performing tunes from their most recent album, Monster’s Ball. Ages 2–7

The Pop Ups

This high-energy duo—two-time Grammy nominees—presents a concert featuring live drawing, puppets, and a costume party for the holiday of Purim. Ages 3 – 8

The Paper Bag Players: Stand Up and Cheer, We’re 60 This Year

The latest fun-filled production from the famed Paper Bags blends cardboard and paper sets, whimsical stories, lovable characters, and live music that will have families dancing in the aisles. Ages 3 – 8

Hot Peas ‘N Butter

Hot Peas ‘N Butter’s multicultural rhythms range from vibrant Puerto Rican folk music to soulful American blues, as the band performs tunes celebrating nature from their latest release, Back to The Land.

Freedom Art Jam Art & Dance Party for Passover

A festive afternoon celebrates Passover with the soulful sounds of ShirLaLa; themed workshops for kids to craft holiday artifacts and freedom shakers; a giant collaborative art project; and gallery tours. Ages 3 and up

DROP-IN ART PROGRAMS

Studio Art Sessions
Sundays through May 12, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Free with Museum Admission
Families explore new themes each week in these drop-in art workshops. Paint, draw, sculpt, or craft a work of art inspired by exhibitions on view. Parents can visit the Jewish Museum’s website for details. Ages 3 and up

Archaeology Mondays
Mondays, January 21, February 18, March 25, April 22, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Free with Museum Admission
Unique in New York City, the Jewish Museum’s simulated archaeological dig highlights replicas from ancient to modern times in a hands-on experience. Kids can collect stamps in a special passport each visit, and receive a gift after three digs. Ages 3 – 10

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Drop-In Art Workshop: Dream Tree Collages
Monday, January 21, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Free with Museum Admission
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the holiday of Tu B’Shevat (Jewish Arbor Day), kids can create collages of words from Dr. King’s speeches and images from nature to form tree designs. Ages 3 and up

Vacation Week Drop-In Art Workshop: Imaginary Dioramas
February 17-19, 21, and 22, 1:00 pm– 4:00 pm

Inspired by the works of artist Martha Rosler, kids can design imaginative dioramas using colorful papers, textures, and magazine pictures. Ages 3 and up

Passover Week Drop-In Art Workshop: Painted Wonders

Kids will make original art with Passover and springtime themes. Ages 3 and up

Second Sundays Dig Drop-In
The second Sunday of each month, through May 12

Kids can discover a passion for ancient artifacts in the Museum’s simulated archaeological dig, open on the second Sunday of each month. Ages 3 – 10

Picture This!
Sundays, January 27, February 10, March 17, April 28, 10:00 am–12:30 pm
Tickets: $25 general public, $22 Jewish Museum Family Members
Each program begins with a 10:00 am gallery program that includes interactive art-viewing activities and a storybook reading, followed by an opportunity to create original artworks and a concert at 11:30 am featuring an acclaimed performer. Ages 4 – 7

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Art Explorers
Tuesdays, January 15, February 12, March 12, April 16, 3:30 pm–4:30 pm
Tickets: $10 general public, $8 Jewish Museum Family Members
Preschoolers and their adult companions can explore Scenes from the Collection through themed tours and engaging gallery activities, followed by a visit to the Museum’s art studio. Ages 3 and 4

ACCESS FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Workshops for Kids with Disabilities
Sundays, February 24 and May 19, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm
Examine art on view and create a work of your own in these programs for families with children who have developmental and learning disabilities. Workshops include gallery activities and an art project. Ages 5 – 17
