Hanukkah Family Day

Construct a sculptural Hanukkah menorah with funky found objects (a Jewish Museum tradition), dance to the tunes of ShirLaLa, watch the Hanukkah story come to life through a drawing performance with Jeff Hopkins, and explore the Museum’s world-famous collection of Hanukkah lamps.

Hanukkah Family Day Schedule:

Noon – 4 pm: Drop-in Art Workshops

Glittering Hanukkah Sculptures – Design playful Hanukkah sculptures with found objects inspired by the exhibition, Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power, as well as Hanukkah lamps in the Museum’s permanent exhibition.

Menorah Mural – Collaborate on a giant menorah collage.

Dreidel Decorating – Decorate wooden dreidels with whimsical patterns and colors.

Light Paintings – Create abstract works of art inspired by the paintings of Lee Krasner and Norman Lewis using light as a theme.


12:30 pm: Drawing Performance: Hanukkah Stories Coming to Life

See a playful tale unfold in this eye-catching performance by storyteller and illustrator Jeff Hopkins using live drawing, animation, and narration with sound and movement.


2:30 pm: ShirLaLa Hanukkah Concert

Hear kid rocker Shira Kline perform a musical re-enactment of the Hanukkah story, full of heroes, drama, and miracles. Hear tunes from her holiday album such as “Chanukah Bamba,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and more.


1:30 pm and 3:00 pm: Spotlight Tours

Discover Hanukkah lamps from around the world on a brief gallery tour.


All day: Self-guided Printed Family Guides

Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power and From the Margins: Lee Krasner and Norman Lewis, 1945 – 1952, and for Hanukkah lamps on view in the Museum’s permanent exhibition, Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey, will be available.
