Associate Registrar

The Jewish Museum is seeking a full-time Associate Registrar for a twenty-month fixed term position. Under the supervision of the Head Registrar, and working collaboratively with the Museum’s Registration, Collections Management, Curatorial, and Exhibition Management staff, the Associate Registrar will manage registration, primarily, for a largescale collection reinstallation project. This position requires flexibility to work on-site as often as five days per week and demonstrated knowledge of current professional museum registration standards and best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a team of registrars to manage the deinstallation and reinstallation of the Museum’s permanent collection galleries on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Museum, and a temporary exhibition of collection highlights.
  • Prepare project budgets and track/monitor expenditures.
  • Prepare workplans and installation schedules.
  • Coordinate packing, crating, shipping, and art storage arrangements.
  • Coordinate conservation, framing, and mount making needs for installation.
  • Perform condition reports on artwork.
  • Participate in planning for future gallery rotations, including conservation assessments, budgeting, and gallery maintenance planning.
  • Prepare condition report forms, shipping receipts, certificates of insurance, and other related documents.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records.
  • Schedule and manage art handlers during installations/deinstallations. 
  • Provide support to Head Registrar on department projects and assist with temporary exhibitions and incoming loans as needed.

Requirements:

  • BA, required, MA or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience in exhibitions registration, preferably at an art museum.
  • Knowledge of museum standards for art handling, installation, packing, and domestic/international shipping.
  • Experience using TMS database.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong oral/written communication, and meticulous record-keeping.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience overseeing and managing art handlers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Availability for early morning, evening and weekend work as needed for shipments and during installation/deinstallation periods.
  • Knowledge of foreign language(s) helpful.

Salary Range for Position: $67,500 - 72,000
