Senior Manager, Human Resources

The Senior Manager, Human Resources will play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department. In this highly visible position, the Senior Manager will be responsible for overseeing talent recruitment and retention, payroll and benefits administration, and staff morale initiatives. The Senior Manager will also support the Director, Human Resources in areas of compensation, labor and employee relations, training and professional development, and the Museum’s ambitious DEAI initiatives.  The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast-paced, employee-focused Human Resources Department who brings with them a positive, can-do attitude with the goal of providing the highest level of service to the Museum’s staff, interns, volunteers, and guests.

Schedule: Full-time; 35 hours / 5 days a week

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department, including payroll, benefits-administration, training and professional development, and staff morale initiatives and wellness programming
  • Manage the Museum’s full life cycle of talent and recruiting, with a focus on establishing a pipeline of diverse and exceptional talent through enhanced sourcing, recruitment, and onboarding protocols   
  • Serve as a trusted resource for the staff, promoting a culture of inclusion, equity, accountability, and excellence while encouraging an ongoing open-door policy
  • In partnership with the Finance department, oversee the Museum’s payroll processing and related projects; maintain and update the Museum’s payroll and timekeeping system
  • Manage all aspects of the Museum’s benefit plans, including Open Enrollment, contract renewals and compliance while serving as a staff resource for all benefit-related inquires
  • Organize ongoing training and development programs; actively source professional development opportunities which support the Museum’s mission, vision, and ongoing DEAI goals  
  • In conjunction with Director, Human Resources and Chief Legal Counsel, ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws; Oversee related filings including, but not limited to, the annual EEO-1, 1095-C, and PCORI filings
  • Provide support for the Financial Statement Audit, the Defined Contribution plan audit and the Worker’s Compensation Audit, in partnership with the Finance Department
  • Administer the Museum’s leave-of-absence programs and associated benefit filings including FMLA, NYPFL, Paid Parental Leave, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability, and Worker’s Compensation
  • Coach, mentor, develop and provide proactive, day-to-day supervision to the Human Resources Assistant; provide supervision to HR interns
  • Drive effectiveness of the Human Resources function through simplification, process improvement, and increased technological capability  
  • Serve as a resource for all COVID-related policies and procedures as they pertain to the Museum’s HR Department
  • Monitor the performance evaluation process; conduct annual performance evaluation training sessions for employees and supervisors
  • Oversee staff morale initiatives including monthly programming as well as the annual staff holiday party
  • Participate in departmental and institutional meetings, strategy sessions and activities

Requirements:

The Museum seeks a candidate with the following skills, attributes, and expertise:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as an HR generalist or in a similar role, with an emphasis on recruitment experience and interest
  • Experience and strong interest in the life-cycle recruitment process
  • Experience in administering health, 403b, and employee benefit plans
  • A collaborative individual and an active listener who is approachable and has a proven ability to build consensus
  • A mature professional who will serve as a role model and embody the Museum’s core values of honesty, integrity, and respect for others
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a discrete and professional manner and maintain confidential information where required
  • Ability to comfortably work with staff members at all levels across the institution
  • Experience in a non-profit or cultural institution preferred 
  • Experience working with union and non-union staff preferred
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and in a clear and concise manner
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification preferred
  • Experience with MS Office, Google Suite, and ADP Workforce Now preferred
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or World Health Organization (WHO) authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a qualified disability or sincerely held religious belief or other legal basis)
