The FunkeyMonkeys Perform Family Concert at the Jewish Museum Sunday, September 25

Release Date: September 12, 2016

The FunkeyMonkeys return to the Jewish Museum with a concert for families on Sunday, September 25 at 11:30 am.   Described as “Seinfeld meets the Wiggles,” this uniquely hip eight-member band incorporates funny sketches and improvised bits, along with their special brand of funky kid's music, ranging from driving afrobeat to ethereal ballads.  The performance will feature tunes from their albums Mustache, Tastes Like Chicken, Sing Dance Underpants, and Jewish FunkeyMonkeys, including hits related to the Jewish fall holidays with a special Monkeys twist.  During the performance, the Monkeys will also explore connections between art and music as audience members can come on stage to draw with the band.

Studio Art Sessions Family Art Workshops Every Sunday at the Jewish Museum

Release Date: September 6, 2016

The Jewish Museum has expanded its Sunday art workshop series for families, offering an immersive experience that includes weekly art projects and a new collaborative artmaking component. In Studio Art Sessions, families will have the opportunity to contribute to an ongoing large scale work of art, which will change every two months. Each collective project will explore unconventional approaches to artmaking, using unique materials and concepts that relate to artwork on view or in the Jewish Museum’s collection.

Exhibition of Participatory Works by 42 Contemporary Artists Opens September 16, 2016 at the Jewish Museum

Release Date: September 1, 2016

This fall, the Jewish Museum is upending museum conventions with Take Me (I’m Yours), an exhibition featuring artworks that visitors are asked to touch, participate in, and even take home. On view from September 16, 2016 through February 5, 2017, Take Me (I’m Yours) will feature a group of 42 international and intergenerational artists working in a variety of media including sculpture, works on paper, installation, performance, and digital media. Many of the artists are creating new and site-specific works for the exhibition. On average, 10,000 of each work will be produced for visitors to take away. Over the course of four months, artworks will be replenished so what awaits visitors will constantly evolve. Selected artists include Uri Aran, Christian Boltanski, Andrea Bowers, Andrea Fraser, General Sisters, Gilbert & George, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jonathan Horowitz, Alison Knowles, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Jonas Mekas, Yoko Ono, Rachel Rose, Martha Rosler, Tino Sehgal, Haim Steinbach, Amalia Ulman, and Lawrence Weiner, among others.

Fall 2016 Season of Lively Family Programs Begins at the Jewish Museum in September

Release Date: August 25, 2016

The Jewish Museum launches its fall 2016 season of family programs in September with a lively array of concerts, art workshops, and more.  The line-up includes Sunday concerts by The FunkeyMonkeys on September 25, Josh and the Jamtones on October 9, Gustafer Yellowgold on October 16, Alex & the Kaleidoscope on November 20, and Oran Etkin on December 25.  Also on the schedule are: the annual Hanukkah Family Day on December 18; holiday and vacation week drop-in art workshops October 20 and 21 and December 26, 27, 29 & 30; and family art activities every Sunday starting September 11.

On view from September 16, 2016 through February 5, 2017, Take Me (I'm Yours) will feature 40 international and intergenerational artists working in a variety of media, from sculpture, works on paper, installation, performance, and digital media. Many of the artists are creating new and site-specific works for the exhibition. On average, 10,000 of each work will be produced for visitors to take away, including temporary tattoos by Lawrence Weiner, air dispensers by Yoko Ono, pill capsules by Carsten Höller, and more.

The Jewish Museum Launches Picture This! New Monthly Family Program Series September 25 Supported by Grant from PJ Library, a Program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation

The Jewish Museum is launching Picture This!, a new monthly series of eight multifaceted family programs, thanks to a $25,000 grant awarded to the Museum by PJ Library, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. Each monthly Picture This! program will combine a gallery experience exploring art on view with fun, interactive activities and a storybook reading. Families will also enjoy a snack, create art in a studio, and join other families to experience a concert featuring a top children’s music performer. The series kicks off on Sunday, September 25 and runs through May 2017.

The Television Project: You Don’t Have to Be Jewish
Highlights from the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting Examine Classic and Contemporary Advertising Beginning September 16, 2016

Release Date: July 21, 2016

With the third installment of its ongoing exhibition series, the Jewish Museum will continue introducing visitors to a dynamic part of its collection: the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting (NJAB). The Television Project: You Don’t Have to Be Jewish, on view from September 16, 2016 through February 12, 2017, explores commercials produced for Jewish audiences or with Jewish content, and examines the way religion, ethnicity, and identity play out on American television. This focused exhibition features a compilation of commercials and related clips, paired with print advertising campaigns, works of art, and related ephemera. A number of the commercials employ humor to attract a diverse customer base, and have become iconic examples of campaigns that are still referenced today.

The Jewish Museum continues its summer 2016 slate of lectures, discussions, and events in May with a performance by clarinetist-composer Don Byron as part of the Museum's ongoing partnership with Bang on a Can.  Other highlights include an adult studio workshop inspired by the work of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx; a behind-the-scenes gallery talk led by Jewish Museum Associate Curator Stephen Brown; and gallery discussions on specific themes and topics in the exhibitions Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History and Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist.

The Jewish Museum and Bang on a Can Present Bang on a Can: Performance by Don Byron

Release Date: June 21, 2016

On Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 7:30pm, Bang on a Can and the Jewish Museum will present a concert by clarinetist-composer Don Byron. A long-time collaborator of Bang on a Can, Byron has always found exhilarating and unexpected musical avenues to explore, interpreting a wildly diverse range of styles and artists from funk-drenched R&B to klezmer, from gospel legend Thomas A. Dorsey to Mickey Katz, Duke Ellington to Junior Walker. Don Byron is renowned for his dedication to and innovation in quintessential American traditional music genres from klezmer to blues to bluegrass to gospel to jazz. This program is made possible by a generous endowment from the William Petschek Family.

Photography and Filming Policy

Members of the media may photograph or film within approved areas of the Jewish Museum for the purpose of news coverage. Photo and video shoots must be approved by the Communications Department and arranged at least 48 hours in advance. All organized photo or film shoots inside the Museum require an escort by a member of the Communications staff. Please contact us for more information or to discuss scheduling a shoot.
