Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History Programs Feature Isaac Mizrahi in Conversation, Screening of Unzipped with Q&A, and More

Release Date: March 21, 2016

In conjunction with its new exhibition, Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History, the Jewish Museum will present an extensive series of public programs, including Isaac Mizrahi, the influential American fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur, in conversation with Wendy Goodman, Design Editor of New York Magazine on April 7 and with choreographer Mark Morris on May 24.  Other highlights include a screening of Unzipped, the 1995 film about Mizrahi, followed by a Q&A with the artist, at Film Forum on April 10; and a panel discussion featuring young designers discussing the current fashion landscape.

Folk Rock Concert for Families with Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower at the Jewish Museum Sunday, April 10

Release Date: March 21, 2016

Two-time Grammy nominee Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower will perform a folk rock concert for families on Sunday, April 10 at 11:30am at the Jewish Museum.  Mitchell, a singer and guitarist known for reinterpreting classic folk songs for children and their parents, will be joined by her fourteen-year-old daughter Storey, her husband Daniel Littleton, and special guests Simi Stone and The M Shanghai Stringband. Concert attendees can enjoy cherished folk classics such as You Are My Sunshine and Peace Like a River, as well as soulful originals from Mitchell’s most recent album, Turn Turn Turn, her collaboration with Dan Zanes.

Acclaimed Fashion Designer Isaac Mizrahi Focus of Major Exhibition

Release Date: March 7, 2016

The Jewish Museum presents the first exhibition focused on Isaac Mizrahi, the influential American fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur, from March 18 to August 7, 2016.  Through over 250 works, including clothing and costume designs, sketches, photographs, and an immersive video installation, this survey exhibition explores Mizrahi’s unique position at the intersection of high style and popular culture.  While best known for his work in fashion, Mizrahi’s creativity has expanded over a three decade career to embrace acting, directing, set and costume design, writing, and cabaret performance. Beginning with his first collection in 1987 and running through the present day, Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History weaves together the many threads of Mizrahi's prolific output, juxtaposing work in fashion, film, television, and the performing arts.

The Jewish Museum continues its 2016 slate of lectures, discussions, and events in March with "Albert Einstein" as portrayed by theoretical physicist Sylvester James Gates, Jr, recipient of the National Medal of Science, in conversation with the Jewish Museum’s Jens Hoffmann; as well as Columbia University School of the Arts MFA candidates and recent alumni responding to the current exhibition, Unorthodox.  Other programs include the next event in the popular after-hours series, The Wind Up, and artist Omer Fast presenting his 2012 short film Continuity.

The Pop Ups Perform Concert for Families at the Jewish Museum Sunday, March 20

Release Date: February 24, 2016

The acclaimed kids’ indie rock duo The Pop Ups will perform a concert for families at The Jewish Museum on Sunday, March 20 at 11:30am. Fresh from appearances on the kids’ stages at Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza, The Pop Up will perform songs from their new album, Great Pretenders Club, as well as classics from their two Grammy-nominated albums,  Radio Jungle and Appetite for Construction.  The duo transports family audiences into a world where imagination becomes reality with a fire-stomping rhino, dancing robots, giant insects, live drawing, huge balloons, and a costume party for Purim. This highly interactive show is propelled by dance beats that will catapult both young and old out of their seats.

“Albert Einstein” in Conversation with Jens Hoffmann at the Jewish Museum March 3

Release Date: February 23, 2016

The Jewish Museum will present Wish You Were Here: Albert Einstein on Thursday, March 3 at 6:30pm.  Jens Hoffmann, Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs, will speak with "Albert Einstein" as portrayed by theoretical physicist Sylvester James Gates, Jr, recipient of the National Medal of Science. The evening will offer an interactive component, integrating questions and comments from Twitter and other social media platforms received in advance. Over a period of two years, Hoffmann is interviewing the subjects of Andy Warhol's Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century (1980), interpreted by prominent experts, as if each were coming to the Museum to have a conversation in the present day.

Symposium Featuring Leading International Curators at the Jewish Museum February 28

In conjunction with its current exhibition, Unorthodox, the Jewish Museum will present Unorthodox: On Museums, a half-day symposium on Sunday, February 28 from 2pm to 6:30pm. International and local curators, including contributors to the exhibition catalogue, will discuss the unconventional and nonconformist approaches to programming at their various institutions.  Speakers include:Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (Director, Castello di Rivoli); Peter Eleey (Associate Director of Exhibitions and Programs, MoMA P.S. 1.); Massimiliano Gioni (Artistic Director, New Museum); Thelma Golden (Director and Chief Curator, The Studio Museum in Harlem); Kathy Halbreich (Associate Director, The Museum of Modern Art); Ruba Katrib (Curator, SculptureCenter); Vasif Kortun (Director of Research and Programs, SALT Istanbul); Jessica Morgan (Director, Dia Art Foundation); Adriano Pedrosa (Artistic Director, São Paulo Museum of Art); Scott Rothkopf (Deputy Director for Programs and Nancy and Steve Crown Family Chief Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art); and Nancy Spector (Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum). Jens Hoffmann (Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs, The Jewish Museum) and Bruce Altshuler (Director, Program in Museum Studies, New York University) will serve as moderators.  This symposium is presented in collaboration with the Program in Museum Studies, New York University.

Exhibition Exploring Suspicious Provenance of Colonial American Portrait Pair from the Jewish Museum Collection Opens March 18, 2016

Release Date: February 19, 2016

Raising questions of authenticity and fraud, Masterpieces & Curiosities: The Fictional Portrait will reveal surprising new analysis of two portraits once thought to depict an 18th century Jewish couple. On view at the Jewish Museum from March 18 through August 14, 2016, the exhibition will present the disputed works alongside a selection of other portraits from the Museum’s collection, offering a reflection on questions of truth and representation in portraiture. During a decade of research, the identities of the artist and sitters have been reconsidered through archival investigation, genealogical studies, and recent X-ray analysis.

Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist Opens May 6 at the Jewish Museum

Release Date: February 18, 2016

From Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Beach, throughout Brazil and around the world, the innovative and prolific work of Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) has made him one of the most prominent landscape architects of the twentieth century.  From May 6 through September 18, 2016, the Jewish Museum will present the first New York City exhibition to focus on Burle Marx in more than two decades, and the first exhibition in the United States to showcase the full range of his artistic output. Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist will explore the richness and breadth of the artist’s oeuvre through nearly 150 works – from landscape architecture to painting, from sculpture to theater design, and from tapestries to jewelry.

Purim Ball 2016 to Honor Isaac Mizrahi at Park Avenue Armory February 24, 2016

Release Date: February 9, 2016

This year’s Purim Ball, the Jewish Museum’s annual gala, will honor fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi and feature a unique take on the Purim story by actress/ comedienne/singer Sandra Bernhard. Held at Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan on Wednesday evening, February 24, 2016, the festive evening of celebration and dancing will also include live music by Joe McGinty and The Losers Lounge and a DJ set by Louie XIV.

Photo and video shoots must be approved by the Communications Department and arranged at least 48 hours in advance.
