The Wind Up Series of After-Hours Events Presents
Performance by Mykki Blanco
On November 20

Release Date: October 8, 2014

The Jewish Museum presents the next event in its popular series of after hours events, The Wind Up. Featuring art, live music, activities, and an open bar, The Wind Up will take place on Thursday, November 20 from 8pm to 11pm.  Focused on the exhibition From the Margins: Lee Krasner | Norman Lewis, 1945 – 1952, the evening features a performance by rapper, performance artist, and poet Mykki Blanco. Multi-gendered and genre defying, Blanco brings hip-hop, electronica, and punk into surprising juxtaposition with high-fashion drag and queer performance.

Astrograss
Performs Family Concert
at the Jewish Museum Sunday, October 12

Release Date: September 18, 2014

The kids bluegrass band Astrograss will perform a concert for families on Sunday, October 12 at 11:30 am at The Jewish Museum.  Presenting a rich blend of bluegrass, old-time, and folk music, Astrograss will lead the audience in sing-alongs to traditional classics and high-energy fiddle hoedowns. The band will also perform tunes from their 2012 album, Colored Pencil Factory, as well as songs celebrating the natural world in honor of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

Large-Scale Floral Sculpture by
Willem de Rooij
Created for the Jewish Museum’s Lobby

Release Date: September 18, 2014

From October 31, 2014 through April 20, 2015, the Jewish Museum’s lobby will feature a site-specific floral sculpture by Dutch artist Willem de Rooij titled Bouquet XI. The artist’s first solo presentation at a New York museum, Bouquet XI is a nearly ten-foot-tall floral sculpture comprised of colorful and diverse Middle Eastern flora. This work is the third iteration of Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings, a series showcasing new works by artists from around the globe in the Skirball Lobby.

The Jewish Museum and
Russ & Daughters Announce
New Partnership to Open Dining
and Retail Location in Early 2015

Release Date: September 9, 2014

The Jewish Museum is partnering with Russ & Daughters, famed 100 year old New York City appetizing shop and restaurant purveyors of the highest quality smoked fish, caviar, and specialty foods, to launch an additional dining and retail location in the Museum, set to open in early 2015. Russ & Daughters at the Jewish Museum will be a 75-seat, sit-down kosher café and take-out retail counter in the Museum’s lower level. The space is currently undergoing a renovation led by Solomonoff Architecture Studio, blending the design of the iconic Russ & Daughters shop with the Museum’s historic building. The museum’s café is closed for renovation through the opening in early 2015.

U.S. Premiere of Israeli Artist Dani Gal's New Video Installation September 12

Release Date: August 22, 2014

The Jewish Museum will present the U.S. premiere of Israeli artist Dani Gal’s As from Afar. Co-produced by the Jewish Museum, Gal’s new installation examines the relationship between Simon Wiesenthal, an architect and Holocaust survivor who devoted his life to hunting Nazi criminals, and Albert Speer, Hitler’s chief architect and close confidant. Speer initiated a correspondence with Wiesenthal in 1974 in an effort to accept responsibility for his war crimes.

Israeli Video Art Presentation in August 2014 Part of
Sights and Sounds: Global Film and Video Series
at the Jewish Museum

Release Date: August 1, 2014

As part of an exhibition series highlighting contemporary film and video work from around the world, the Jewish Museum is presenting a selection of four films by Israeli artists from August 1 – 28. Video art is a dominant medium among artists in Israel who came of age in the 1990s when hi-tech culture and exposure to international news and pop culture via television were increasing. The works in Sights and Sounds: Israel contain motifs of transformation and metamorphosis, exploring the intersection of the personal and political within society.

The Jewish Museum Launches New Website
Designed by Sagmeister & Walsh

Release Date: July 31, 2014

The Jewish Museum has launched a completely new website designed by Sagmeister & Walsh, the New York City design firm led by Stefan Sagmeister and Jessica Walsh, which also designed the Museum's new graphic identity. Available at thejewishmuseum.org, the website features a responsive design that gives users access to all site content across any device or screen size. It also offers richer content on the Museum and its collection, significantly increasing opportunities for online engagement.

Masterpieces & Curiosities: A Russian American Quilt

Showcasing a colorful patchwork quilt bearing Eastern European and American imagery, Masterpieces & Curiosities: A Russian American Quilt continues a series of exhibitions focused on individual works in the Jewish Museum’s world-renowned collection. On view from August 22, 2014 to February 15, 2015, this exhibition highlights a rare quilt (c. 1899), a fascinating expression of the acculturation process undergone by newly arrived immigrants.

Photography and Filming Policy

Members of the media may photograph or film within approved areas of the Jewish Museum for the purpose of news coverage. Photo and video shoots must be approved by the Communications Department and arranged at least 48 hours in advance. All organized photo or film shoots inside the Museum require an escort by a member of the Communications staff. Please contact us for more information or to discuss scheduling a shoot.
