The Jewish Museum will present Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything, a contemporary art exhibition devoted to the imagination and legacy of the influential singer/songwriter, man of letters, and global icon from Montreal, Canada. The exhibition will be on view from April 12 through September 8, 2019. Organized by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC), where it debuted, the exhibition is curated by John Zeppetelli, Director and Chief Curator at the MAC, and Victor Shiffman, Co-Curator. Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything will embark on a tour, with the Jewish Museum as its first stop. Following its New York presentation, the exhibition will travel to Copenhagen and San Francisco.

The Jewish Museum will present Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art, the first exhibition to explore the remarkable career of Edith Halpert (1900-1970), the influential American art dealer and founder of the Downtown Gallery in New York City. A pioneer in the field and the first significant female gallerist in the United States, Halpert propelled American art to the fore at a time when the European avant-garde still enthralled the world. The artists she supported — Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Ben Shahn, and Charles Sheeler key among them — became icons of American modernism. Halpert also brought vital attention to overlooked nineteenth-century American artists, such as William Michael Harnett, Edward Hicks, and Raphaelle Peale, as well as little-known and anonymous folk artists. With her revolutionary program at the Downtown Gallery, Halpert inspired generations of Americans to value the art of their own country, in their own time.

The Jewish Museum held its 33rd Annual Purim Ball at the Park Avenue Armory on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, honoring Robert and Tracey Pruzan and The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation. The Museum’s annual fundraising gala gathered over 1,000 notable members of New York’s corporate, social, and art and cultural communities for a festive dinner and lively after party in celebration of Purim. This year’s Purim Ball raised a record $3 million in support of the Museum.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, one of the most important moments in gay civil rights history, the Jewish Museum is joining dozens of non-profit and cultural organizations as part of the Stonewall 50 Consortium, paying tribute through a year of programming, while highlighting works of art from the Jewish Museum's collection that explore themes of gender and identity.

The Jewish Museum launches its winter/spring 2019 season of public programs in January with lectures, panel discussions, adult studio workshops, and more. Highlights include a panel discussion on art and politics with contemporary artists Zoe Strauss and Eric Gottesman on February 14; a conversation with artists Ross Bleckner and Deb Kass on March 7; and concerts featuring ETHEL on February 28, Daniel Gortler and Daniel Guerdes on May 16, and Meredith Monk on May 30.

Bang on a Can and the Jewish Museum’s 2018-2019 concert season, pairing innovative music with the Museum’s exhibitions and showcasing leading female performers and composers, continues on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 7:30pm. The acclaimed string quartet ETHEL performs the complete string quartets of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe: Dig Deep, Early that Summer, Four Marys, and Blue Dress. This is the first performance of all of Wolfe's string quartets at one time, on one stage. 

The Jewish Museum launches its winter/spring 2019 season of family programs in January with performances, art workshops, and more. The Museum welcomes two new acts to its slate of family performances, with Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats and  Michael & The Rockness Monsters joining long-time favorites The Pop Ups, Hot Peas ‘N Butter, and The Paper Bag Players. Other programs on the schedule are the annual Freedom Art Jam Art & Dance Party for Passover on April 7; drop-in art workshops every Sunday and on selected holiday weekdays; and family art activities. The Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center will present the 28th annual New York Jewish Film Festival (NYJFF), January 9–22, 2019. Among the oldest and most influential Jewish film festivals worldwide, the NYJFF each year presents the finest documentary, narrative, and short films from around the world that explore the diverse Jewish experience. Featuring new work by fresh voices in international cinema as well as restored classics, the festival’s 2019 lineup includes 32 wide-ranging and exciting features and shorts from the iconic to the iconoclastic, many of which will be screening in their world, U.S., and New York premieres. Screenings are held at the Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street, NYC.

The Jewish Museum offers many ways to mark the holiday of Hanukkah, which begins at sundown on Sunday, December 2. Highlights include a display of the Museum’s renowned collection of Hanukkah lamps; special family programs, including the annual Hanukkah Family Day; and unique menorahs, dreidels, and gift items available for sale in the Jewish Museum Shop.

The Jewish Museum's exhibition Accumulations: Hanukkah Lamps features over 80 Hanukkah lamps representing four continents and six centuries of artistic production. One of seven sections that make up the Jewish Museum’s third floor collection exhibition, Scenes from the Collection, “Accumulations” spotlights an aspect of museum collecting: the accumulation of multiple examples of a given work or similar works. The Jewish Museum’s collection of Hanukkah lamps is the largest in the world at nearly 1,050 pieces, and was amassed over the 116 years of the Museum’s existence.  The Hanukkah lamps on view reflect a wide variety of stylistic influences and decorative techniques
