The Jewish Museum’s 2017 slate of lectures, discussions, and events continues in July with tours of Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry led by artists Auste, Yevgeniya Baras, and Matt Phillips; and a performance by indie-guitarist Kaki King, among other programs.

The Jewish Museum will present Stettheimer Summer Mondays, a fun-filled drop-in art workshop for families on July 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 1 pm to 4 pm.Inspired by works on view in the current exhibition, Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry, these workshops are geared towards children age 3 and up and are FREE with museum admission.

The Jewish Museum’s 2017 slate of lectures, discussions, and events continues in June with a performance featuring composer John Zorn and poet Kenneth Goldsmith; "Franz Kafka" as portrayed by writer Rivka Galchen, in conversation with the Jewish Museum's Jens Hoffmann; and a concert by Banda de Los Muertos as part of the annual Museum Mile Festival, among other programs.

The Jewish Museum will present acclaimed concert pianist Daniel Gortler on Thursday, May 18 at 7:30pm in Brahms Between Past and Future, a solo evening featuring works by Alban Berg, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Johannes Brahms.

The first major U.S. exhibition in over 20 years focused on Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) opens at the Jewish Museum on May 5, 2017, and will remain on view through September 24, 2017. Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry showcases over 50 paintings and drawings in addition to costume and theater designs, photographs, and ephemera, offering a timely reconsideration of this influential American artist with a sharp satirical wit, placing her centrally in the modern dialogue of high and mass culture. The exhibition is organized by the Jewish Museum, New York, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. After its New York City presentation, the exhibition will be on view in Toronto from October 21, 2017 to January 28, 2018.

The Jewish Museum’s 2017 slate of lectures, discussions, and events continues in April with contemporary artists Cecily Brown, Nick Mauss, and Jutta Koether and scholar Emmelyn Butterfield-Rosen, discussing the work of Florine Stettheimer; a concert by Israeli pianist Daniel Gortler; and a talk with artist Adam Pendleton, among other programs.

The Jewish Museum will present Florine Stettheimer Family Day, a fun-filled day of activities geared towards children ages 3 and up, on Sunday, May 21, from 12 noon to 4 pm. Families can celebrate the whimsical and colorful world of painting and theater presented in the exhibition Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry with a drop-in art workshop, music by Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards, and gallery tours of the exhibition.

The Jewish Museum will present the first museum exhibition in the United States of work by Vivian Suter (b. 1949, Argentina) from May 5 through October 22, 2017. This project is part of the series Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings, which brings contemporary art to the Museum's Skirball Lobby. The work on view mimics the simple, rack-like structures Suter builds to dry, store, stretch, and un-stretch her paintings, bringing an echo of her improvisatory style to New York.

Now celebrating its 39th year, the annual Museum Mile Festival takes place rain or shine on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  Over 1.5 million people have taken part in this annual celebration since its inception. Festival attendees can walk the Mile on Fifth Avenue between 82nd Street and 105th Street while visiting seven of New York City’s finest cultural institutions, which are open free to the public throughout the evening. The Museum Mile Festival’s opening ceremony takes place at 5:45pm at El Museo del Barrio (Fifth Avenue at 104th Street). Two-time Grammy nominee Elizabeth Mitchell will perform a folk rock concert for families on Sunday, April 23 at 11:30 am at the Jewish Museum.  Mitchell, a singer and guitarist known for reinterpreting classic folk songs for children and their parents, will be joined by her fifteen-year-old daughter Storey and The M Shanghai Stringband. Concert attendees can enjoy cherished folk classics such as You Are My Sunshine and Peace Like a River, as well as soulful originals from Mitchell’s albums, Catch the Moon and Blue Clouds.

On Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 7:30 pm, Bang on a Can and the Jewish Museum will present the final concert of their 2016-2017 concert season featuring Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow. Chow will perform Tristan Perich’s Surface Image for solo piano, a monumental performance and installation with 40-channel 1-bit electronics, echoing the shimmering quality of Paris’ 19th century arcades and inspired by Walter Benjamin’s renowned essay "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." Chow’s recording of Perich’s Surface Image, acclaimed for it’s “surreal, cacophonous beauty” (The New York Times), was listed #4 in Rolling Stone's 20 Best Avant Albums of 2014. The performance takes place alongside the Jewish Museum’s current exhibition, The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin.

The Jewish Museum will present Modigliani Unmasked, an exhibition featuring early drawings by Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920) that were acquired directly from the artist by Dr. Paul Alexandre, his close friend and first patron. These works—many of which are being shown for the first time in the U.S.— will illuminate how Modigliani’s heritage as an Italian Sephardic Jew is pivotal to understanding his artistic output. The exhibition will be on view at the Jewish Museum from September 15, 2017 through February 4, 2018.
