New York, NY, November 30, 2022—The Jewish Museum will present After “The Wild”: Contemporary Art from The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Collection, an exhibition highlighting contemporary artworks by 47 intergenerational and internationally based artists made between 1963 and 2022. These works are part of a larger gift to the Museum in 2018 comprising artworks made by the recipients of The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Award. After “The Wild”: Contemporary Art from The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Collection will be on view at the Jewish Museum from March 24 through October 1, 2023.

New York, NY, November 28, 2022 – Celebrate Hanukkah with the Jewish Museum! Highlights include a selection of Hanukkah lamps on view from the Museum’s renowned collection; special family programs including a concert with Oran Etkin on December 25; and unique menorahs, dreidels, and gift items available for sale in the Jewish Museum Shop. Hanukkah begins on the evening of Sunday, December 18, and runs through Monday, December 26. The Jewish Museum is free on Saturdays, and children 18 and under are always free. Timed tickets are strongly recommended.

The Jewish Museum will present The Sassoons, an exhibition that reveals the fascinating story of a remarkable Jewish family, highlighting their pioneering role in trade, art collecting, architectural patronage, and civic engagement from the early 19th century through World War II. On view from March 3 through August 13, 2023, the exhibition will follow four generations from Iraq to India, China, and England, featuring a rich selection of works collected by family members over time.

New York, NY, October 28, 2022–The installation Personas: Artists on Artists explores artists’ portrayals of other artists and themselves, offering an historical view of Jewish identities in all their many facets. Artists included are Ethel Fisher, Andrea Geyer, Lyle Ashton Harris, Deborah Kass, Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Arnold Newman, Gordon Parks, Larry Rivers, Joan Semmel, Andy Warhol, Hannah Wilke, and Martin Wilner. Personas: Artists on Artists is on view in the Jewish Museum’s third floor collection exhibition, Scenes from the Collection, from October 28, 2022, through April 2023.

New York, NY, September 30, 2022 –The Jewish Museum announced today that Claudia Gould, Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director, will step down when her contract expires in June 2023 and will continue in her role as Director until her departure. Ms. Gould has been recognized throughout her career for her interdisciplinary approach to exhibitions and public programming. At the Jewish Museum, Ms. Gould spearheaded an integrated program to express the values of the Museum’s mission in contemporary and relevant ways.

New York, NY, July 20, 2022—The Jewish Museum presents New York: 1962-1964, an exhibition that explores a pivotal three-year period in the history of art and culture in New York City, examining how artists living and working in New York responded to their rapidly changing world. Installed across two floors, this immersive exhibition presents more than 150 works of art—all made or seen in New York between 1962-1964—including painting, sculpture, photography, and film, alongside fashion, design, dance, poetry, and ephemera. The exhibition is on view at the Jewish Museum from July 22, 2022, through January 8, 2023. 

New York, NY, June 15, 2022—The Jewish Museum announced today that Liz Munsell will become the Jewish Museum’s Barnett & Annalee Newman Curator of Contemporary Art. Ms. Munsell is currently the Lorraine and Alan Bressler Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She will begin her new role at the Jewish Museum on August 8, 2022.

Houston, TX and New York, NY – June 8, 2022 --The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Jewish Museum, New York today announced a partnership to establish an ongoing presence for Judaica at the MFAH: In July 2022, the MFAH will open the exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The Jewish Museum, New York, the first step in the ongoing partnership, which will bring exceptional objects from the Jewish Museum to Houston over a period of years. In early 2023, ongoing presentations centered on objects on loan from the Jewish Museum will begin when The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Gallery for Judaica opens at the MFAH. The Herzstein Gallery is a centerpiece of the World Faiths Initiative at the MFAH, a program of interfaith projects based on the museum’s collections and exhibitions and funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc.

New York, NY, April 1, 2022–The Jewish Museum presents Coney Island, an installation showcasing photographs of the famed amusement park from the late 1930s through the late 1950s by Martin Elkort, Morris Engel, Sid Grossman, Sidney Kerner, Arthur Leipzig, and Leon Levinstein, along with two “Coney Island” style carousel horses created by master carvers Charles Carmel and Marcus Charles Illions. It will be on view in the Jewish Museum’s collection exhibition Scenes from the Collection beginning April 1, 2022.

New York, NY, April 8, 2022— The Jewish Museum held its 36th Annual Purim Ball at the Park Avenue Armory on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Over 1,000 distinguished guests were in attendance for the festive dinner and the After Party that was hosted by the Jewish Museum’s Young Patrons group. This year’s Purim Ball raised $2.7 million in support of the Museum.

New York, NY, March 31, 2022-- Reaching Across a Thousand Darknesses: Paul Celan Centennial Concert and Reading will be held in the Scheuer Auditorium at the Jewish Museum on Sunday, May 1, from 4 to 6 pm. The program, which celebrates the centennial of Paul Celan, the Romanian Jewish Holocaust survivor who is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, was originally scheduled for 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic. This is the first in-person public program to be held at the Jewish Museum in two years.

New York, NY, March 16, 2022— The Jewish Museum has been awarded a grant of $150,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of a wide range of arts programs, virtual and in-person, serving people with memory loss throughout the five boroughs of New York City, and beyond.
