Feminist challenges to creative and institutional limits have been widely influential in art since the 1960s, with the emergence of the women’s art movement in the United States. The Jewish Museum will present Shifting the Gaze: Painting and Feminism, an exhibition exploring the widespread impact of feminism on contemporary painting over the last fifty years.

The Jewish Museum will present a selection of colorful, luminous lamps designed by internationally renowned architect Frank Gehry in Fish Forms: Lamps by Frank Gehry, on view from August 29 through October 31, 2010. 

The Jewish Museum presents photographer David Goldblatt in conversation with Joseph Lelyveld, former New York Times executive editor and correspondent in South Africa. The two will discuss the new exhibition, South African Photographs: David Goldblatt, on view at the Museum from May 1 through September 19, 2010.

The Jewish Museum will present South African Projections: Films by William Kentridge from May 2 through September 19, 2010. South African William Kentridge’s work is internationally acclaimed for its dramatic qualities and for the artist’s extraordinary techniques. 

The Jewish Museum will present South African Photographs: David Goldblatt, an exhibition of 150 black-and-white silver gelatin prints taken between 1948 and 2009.

The Jewish Museum will present The Monayer Family: Three Videos by Dor Guez from March 14 through September 7, 2010 in the Museum’s Barbara and E. Robert Goodkind Media Center. 

The Jewish Museum will present Modern Art, Sacred Space: Motherwell, Ferber, and Gottlieb from March 14 through August 1, 2010. This new exhibition focuses on a revolutionary moment in American synagogue design.

Curious George, the impish monkey protagonist of many adventures, may never have seen the light of day were it not for the determination and courage of his creators: illustrator H. A. Rey (1898 – 1977) and his wife, author and artist Margret Rey (1906 – 1996). 

The Jewish Museum and The Film Society of Lincoln Center will present the 19th annual New York Jewish Film Festival at The Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater, The Jewish Museum, and The JCC in Manhattan, Jan. 13-28, 2010. The festival’s 32 features and shorts from 13 countries — 29 screening in their U.S. or New York premieres — present a diverse global perspective on the Jewish experience.

This holiday season The Jewish Museum is offering a new guide to Hanukkah on its website, www.thejewishmuseum.org/Hanukkah2009, where visitors can browse through the Museum’s online collection of 300 Hanukkah lamps.

The Jewish Museum will present Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention from November 15, 2009 through March 14, 2010, a major exhibition considering how the artist’s life and career were shaped by his turn-of-the-century American Jewish immigrant experience and his lifelong evasion of his past.

In conjunction with its new exhibition Reinventing Ritual: Contemporary Art and Design for Jewish Life, The Jewish Museum has presented — for the first time — the Henry J. Leir Prize to recognize an outstanding work of art in the show.
