Ralph’s World - Family Concert at the Jewish Museum Sunday, November 8

Ralph’s World will perform a concert for families on Sunday, November 8 at 11:30 am at the Jewish Museum.   Ralph’s World is the musical planet where kids rock out to high-energy tunes by Ralph Covert, the Grammy-nominated, Chicago-based indie rocker. Covert and his bandmates Tommy O'Brien, Brian Sheridan, and Bean Weng bring to their kids’ concerts the same high-energy and super-melodic sense that he developed for his adult pop-rock band, The Bad Examples.

Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings: Valeska Soares, Time Has No Shadows on View in Jewish Museum Lobby this November

Release Date: October 12, 2015

Beginning November 6, an installation by Brazilian-born, New York-based artist Valeska Soares will be on view as part of the ongoing series Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings, which brings newly commissioned contemporary art to the Jewish Museum’s Skirball Lobby. Titled Time Has No Shadows, the piece features a large, vintage carpet onto which poetic texts are placed, with antique pocket watches hanging down from above. On view through April 21, 2016, the installation draws on the artist’s enduring fascination with the subjectivity of time and language, and investigates the history of Jewish migration and resettlement.

Two Shows!
The FunkeyMonkeys Perform Family Concerts at the Jewish Museum Sunday, October 25

Release Date: October 9, 2015

The FunkeyMonkeys return to the Jewish Museum with two concerts for families on Sunday, October 25 at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm.   Described as “Seinfeld meets the Wiggles,” this uniquely hip eight-member band incorporates funny sketches and improvised bits, along with their special brand of funky kid's music, ranging from driving afrobeat to ethereal ballads.  The performance will feature tunes from their albums MustacheTastes Like Chicken, Sing Dance Underpants, and Jewish FunkeyMonkeys.

Unorthodox Presents Work by 55 Contemporary Artists

Release Date: September 30, 2015

This November, the Jewish Museum will present Unorthodox, a large-scale group exhibition featuring 55 contemporary artists from around the world whose practices mix forms and genres without concern for artistic conventions. Though the artists in Unorthodox come from a wide variety of backgrounds and generations, they are united in their spirit of independence and individuality. Through over 200 works, the exhibition will highlight the importance of iconoclasm and art’s key role in breaking rules and traditions. Organized by Jens Hoffmann, Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs, Leon Levy Assistant Curator Daniel S. Palmer, and Assistant Curator Kelly Taxter, Unorthodox will be on view from November 6, 2015 through March 27, 2016.

Kindie Rock Concert for Families with Alison Faith Levy at the Jewish Museum Sunday, October 11

Release Date: September 25, 2015

The Jewish Museum launches its fall 2015 family concert series with a performance by San Francisco-based kindie rocker Alison Faith Levy on Sunday, October 11 at 11:30am.  Levy - formerly “Sippy Alison” of the beloved kids’ psychedelic band The Sippy Cups -  and her Big|Brave Time Tot Rock Band make their New York debut at the Museum, and will perform whimsical ’60s-style tunes from her albums, The Start of Things and World of Wonder, in a high energy, interactive show for the entire family.

October 2015 Programs at the Jewish Museum Feature Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Kenneth Goldsmith, A Panel on Art and Politics, and More

Release Date: September 25, 2015

The Jewish Museum's fall 2015 slate of lectures, discussions, and events launches in October with author talks by writer and activist Letty Cottin Pogrebin and poet Kenneth Goldsmith; a panel on art and politics moderated by Nato Thompson of Creative Time and featuring artists Andrea Bowers, Sharon Hayes, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta; and a lecture on Jewish photographers by historian Deborah Dash Moore. The program series Wish You Were Here, imaginary conversations with the subjects of Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century (1980), will continue with a discussion between famed philosopher Martin Buber, as presented by scholar Sarah Scott, and Jens Hoffmann, The Jewish Museum's Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs.

Jewish Identities and Celebrity Personas of Andy Warhol Muses Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor Focus of Intimate Exhibition Opening September 25

Release Date: September 3, 2015

On view at the Jewish Museum from September 25, 2015 to February 7, 2016, Becoming Jewish: Warhol’s Liz and Marilyn presents a close look at two of Andy Warhol’s muses, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, exploring the Jewish identities of Warhol’s most celebrated subjects. Both Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor converted to Judaism in the 1950s. Warhol was fascinated by their star power and used publicity stills to create his now iconic portraits in the early 1960s. This intimate, single-gallery exhibition features several portraits of these renowned actresses alongside a large selection of photographs, letters, and ephemera, shedding new light on their relationships with Judaism and Warhol’s interest in celebrity culture.

The Jewish Museum Announces Final Lineup for Sights and Sounds: Global Film and Video

Release Date: August 28, 2015

The Jewish Museum’s exhibition series Sights and Sounds: Global Film and Video continues this fall with a lineup of month-long presentations featuring recent film and video works from around the world.  These final presentations of the 25-country series include the Philippines (September 2015), Argentina (October 2015), South Africa (November 2015), Colombia (December 2015), and Japan (January 2016). In February 2016, the Sights and Sounds series will conclude with a five-month presentation of highlighted works, featuring one film from each of the 25 participating countries—on view from February 5 to June 30, 2016.

Fall 2015 Season of Lively Family Programs Begins at the Jewish Museum in September

Release Date: August 13, 2015

The Jewish Museum launches its fall 2015 season of family programs in September with a lively array of concerts, art workshops, and more.  The fall line-up includes Sunday concerts by Alison Faith Levy on October 11, The FunkeyMonkeys on October 25, Ralph’s World on November 8, Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights on December 20, and Oran Etkin’s Timbalooloo on December 25.  Also on the schedule are: Family Days on November 15 and December 6; holiday and vacation week drop-in art workshops October 1 and 2 and December 27, 28, 29 & 31; and family art activities every Sunday starting September 13.

The Television Project
Highlights from the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting Debuts September 25, 2015

Release Date: July 21, 2015

With a new, ongoing exhibition series called The Television Project, the Jewish Museum will introduce visitors to a dynamic part of its collection: the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting (NJAB), the largest and most comprehensive body of broadcast materials on 20th century Jewish culture in the United States. The inaugural exhibition, The Television Project: Picturing a People, on view at the Jewish Museum from September 25, 2015 through February 14, 2016, will feature artistically significant program excerpts celebrating the brilliance of writing, directing, performance, and production in American television, as well as related works of art, artifacts, and ephemera. Picturing a People will include clips from the following programs: The Ed Sullivan Show, Northern Exposure, The Twilight Zone, The Goldbergs, The Simpsons, My Name is Barbra, and Eichmann Trial Coverage (ABC News).

July 2015 Programs at the Jewish Museum Feature Violinist Todd Reynolds and Curator Alexander Tochilovsky

Release Date: June 29, 2015

The Jewish Museum's 2015 slate of lectures, discussions, and events continues in July with a concert featuring violinist Todd Reynolds, part of the Museum’s partnership with Bang on a Can; a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the exhibition, Repetition and Difference, with curators Susan L. Braunstein and Daniel S. Palmer; and Alexander Tochilovsky of Cooper Union discussing graphic design-related materials in the exhibition, Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television.  In addition, the Whitney Museum of American Art and Cooper Union are co-presenting programs related to Revolution of the Eye.

Photo and video shoots must be approved by the Communications Department and arranged at least 48 hours in advance.
