New York, NY, November 13, 2020—Foods such as bagels, gefilte fish, babka, and matzo balls can be a potent symbol of Jewishness, frequently used to signify Jewish identity on television. The exhibition Let’s Eat: Jews and Food on Television illustrates this idea, bringing together excerpts from television and streaming programs from 1979 to 2018, including Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Sex and the City, among others. Shown as part of Scenes from the Collection on the third floor of the Jewish Museum, Let’s Eat: Jews and Food on Television will be on view November 13, 2020 through June 14, 2021. 

New York, NY, October 14, 2020 — The Jewish Museum will present Modern Look: Photography and the American Magazine, an exhibition exploring how photography, graphic design, and popular magazines converged to transform American visual culture from 1930 to 1960. The exhibition will be on view from April 3 through July 11, 2021.

New York, NY, September 24, 2020 —The Jewish Museum is presenting We Fight to Build a Free World: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz upon reopening to the public on Thursday, October 1, 2020. Originally scheduled to open in March 2020, We Fight to Build a Free World is an exhibition curated by Jonathan Horowitz, a New York-based artist who for three decades has made work that engages critically with politics and culture. Under his direction, the exhibition looks at how artists have historically responded to the rise of authoritarianism and xenophobia as well as racism, anti-Semitism, and other forms of bigotry. On view through February 7, 2021, the exhibition also addresses issues surrounding immigration, assimilation, and cultural identity. Admission is free through December 31, 2020; timed tickets required. 

Following over six months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jewish Museum will reopen to the public on Thursday, October 1, 2020,  preceded by five preview days for its Members on September 24, 25, 26, 29, and 30, 2020, from 11am to 4pm. All visitors will enjoy free admission through December 31, 2020, and be able to see the new exhibition (originally scheduled to open in March) We Fight to Build a Free World: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz, as well as Rachel Feinstein: Maiden, Mother, Crone and Scenes from the Collection.

Eight New York City museums are joining together to create the first ever day-long virtual Museum Mile Festival on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, from 9 am to 9 pm. Throughout the day, each museum will host live and pre-recorded programs, virtual exhibition tours, live musical performances, and activities for families streamed across their respective websites and social media platforms. Culture enthusiasts from around the world will now be able to join New Yorkers, during this unprecedented moment, and enjoy the festival.

While the Jewish Museum is temporarily closed to the public, we hope you will explore our virtual offerings, which include a new video of a talk featuring artists Rachel Feinstein and Lisa Yuskavage and filmmaker Tamara Jenkins; an Instagram Live series of discussions with artists Beatriz Milhazes, Andrea Bowers, and Laurie Simmons; and a selection of films from the New York Jewish Film Festival available to stream at home.

On the evening of Thursday, March 12, 2020, Kelly Taxter, the Jewish Museum’s Barnett and Annalee Newman Curator of Contemporary Art, hosted a discussion with artists Rachel Feinstein and Lisa Yuskavage and filmmaker Tamara Jenkins, who all contributed to the catalogue for the Jewish Museum exhibition Rachel Feinstein: Maiden, Mother, Crone. Their conversation was held without an audience and recorded shortly before New York City directed residents to quarantine due to COVID-19. Video of the conversation is available HERE.
